Moravian Memoirs

A searchable database of the metadata of all the holdings as catalogued in the main archives of the Moravian church in Bethlehem and Herrnhut has been created in a collaboration between The Centre for Digital Humanities at University of Gothenburg and Bucknell University. The digital platform uses the metadata (names of authors, places for birth and death, geographical movements), associated with the manuscript materials and provides for the visualization of a searchable database of approximately 60,000 memoirs written between 1750–2012. The corpus consists of mainly first-person narratives by men and women from different classes and national backgrounds. The present digital platform allows for the geospatial and chronological visualization of places for birth and death of the memoirs’ authors; it also shows the geographical movement of authors over a lifetime. The database is designed to allow for continuous updates, as material from other archives become available. The website can be found at moravianlives.org.
